Interview: Inner Wave
Part 2: A Quarantime Chat with Inner Wave’s Jean Pierre
Inner Wave's new EP, Schemin’ perfectly blends enchanting synth and foot-tapping basslines to create something that sounds like nothing they've ever made before. Accompanied by strange lyrics, it is moody and mischievous, disobedient to the idea that a song has to be a singular genre. If I’m honest I can’t place it.
Menacing in the best possible way, the simple yet effective backing track makes a great match for the chorus’ rebellious lyrics. I had a wonderful first encounter with the band last year, and getting the opportunity to catch up online during Quarantime makes me very happy ☺
SWF: The new single is fantastic guys! Was there a moment of inspiration that led to this head bop?
P: It sort of just came from jamming with Chris. I was playing the synth bass with my left hand and the organ with my right while Chris was playing the drums. After creating the skeleton, I wanted to keep it minimal, so I found a lead synth sound I really like and played it for the chorus.
SWF: I get spooky vibes from the sustained keys and haunting lyrics like: “pushing 80 on the 5 as I try to clear my mind” - I love it! Will fans hear a similar wavelength in future projects perhaps?
JP: I think fans can definitely expect more dystopian dance numbers from us! We love dance music from Daft Punk, MSTRKRFT & we love dark haunting sonics like Radiohead.
SWF: I like the sound of that! Speaking of which, the release of Rose and then Schemin’ has me hoping for an album. Is it true?
JP: No new album in the works I’m afraid. We were finishing up ‘wya’ when Rose just came to life. And Schemin’ was one of the first recorded tracks for ‘wyd’
Who knows when an album will arrive.
SWF: Schemin’ to me could definitely be in a Tim Burton soundtrack. If you could attribute this song to a film or tv show, do any come to mind?
P: Have you seen the Netflix Show ‘La Casa De Papel’ / ‘Money Heist’? I think Schemin’ would work well with that show or any similar show. Maybe ‘Black Mirror’!
SWF: I hear that! Finally, I have to ask, are you coming to the UK anytime soon?!
JP: Unfortunately there are no set dates/plans to visit UK. We’d definitely love to! The last time we were there, it was such a fun experience and I can only imagine it being more fun in the future!
