Gig Review: Tame Impala

The Sonic Wizard from Aus returns to London, delivering an otherworldly show that seizes the senses

Let’s begin with an objective truth: Kevin Parker is an icon of modern music. Although the sonic mastermind behind it all remains ambiguous, Tame Impala are irrefutably one of the world's biggest and best musical acts. Having been fortunate enough to snag tickets for their Currents tour in February 2015, I somewhat knew what to expect. Or at least I thought I did.

T minus 2 minutes to lift off, and the air inside the O2’s giant dome is thick with excitement. Anticipative energy is pulsating from the waiting crowds. It begins. The gargantuan screen reveals a dripping, hazy rainbow. From the get go, we know this is not just any old gig. Instantly, multi coloured lasers of giant proportions stream above our heads, moving to Let It Happen with synchronised perfection. I can feel the kick drum tapping on my heart, the bass shaking me from the toes up. At the crescendo, confetti explodes from the cannons, and rains down like a paper waterfall.

From Patience to The Moment to Nangs, Kevin takes us on a journey along the epicentre of Tame Impala’s psychedelic psyche. During the dynamic Elephant, intricate sequences of white, green and red lights glide and zoom right through you. Kevin, barely visible, yells “That’s the way to do it, London!”, and the crowd erupted in roars.

One personal highlight was Kevin getting 20,000 people to chant ‘Julian!’ for his drummer who was about to become a father. A world of colours, giant geometrics and tremendous sound systems, the sonic experience of Tame Impala is unprecedented. Spellbinding visuals, enchanting vocals and magnetic vibrations are a feast for the senses, and when it ends with a smokey Feels Like We Only Go Backwards, we know we’ve watched a true genius do what he was put on Earth to do.
