Single Review: Bvmmer - "If I'm Dead"
Written, recorded, and mixed entirely in Bvmmer's backyard shed, If I'm Dead flips the breakup song archetype on its head. The Tacoma-born artist ventures away from the breakup song tropes of typical sombre styling and instead - crafts a bright bop. A breakup bop that makes you want to dance around your room with your friends instead of weeping alone on your bathroom floor.
Bvmmer blends R&B, Hip Hop and Pop-Rap to create a multi-genre sonic smoothie, which is delicious to the listener's ears. A pair of high-toned, summery piano chords start the record and remain a staple throughout. Their lightness gives If I'd Dead its tropical vibe. A synthesised keyboard serves as the song's nucleus.
Meanwhile, the backing track is made complete with it's rap trimmings. Each metallic drill tone and thunderous 808 boom lends the song its attitude.
The personal lyricism in If I'd Dead infers that Bvmmer is addressing an ex, who remains unnamed. His emotional distress is apparent when he sings "Can't get up when I fall/What's the point of it all?/You don't know what goes on in my head".
Bvmmer's raw lyricism gives you a glimpse into his inner turmoil following a difficult break up. Something both vulnerable, and wildly relatable. This idea is reinforced when he asks "Breaking down in my car/Tryna tear down them walls/But you build them back up again".
If I'd Dead sees Bvmmer grapple with the Universal feeling of wanting to forget about an ex - and wanting them back at the same time. When he asks the question "aren't you tired of always running through my head?" It strikes a Universal chord. If I'm Dead shows that even if someone is bad for you, a part of you might still want to be with them. But fortunately, that feeling goes away with time. If I'd Dead finishes with the reassuring feeling that even if you're not ok with that pesky ex right now - one day you will be.
If I'd Dead is out now.
